I picked my topic for my argument paper for my college writing 121 class. Oh boy, did I underestimate my topic and how much I would have to hold my tongue when people told me their opinions and beliefs. I chose the research question of; Why do we censorship book in high school courses in the US when we should be teaching young adults choice?
One of my sources talked about how The Lorax by Dr. Seuss is banned in California because it criminalizes the forestry industry. Or how a book called The Starplace was and still is banned in Oklahoma because its based on an interracial friendship between two girls.
I was astonished to learn that many of the books I read growing up such as Harry Potter, To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Kite Runner and many more were banned or challenged in the last year. Why do we censor them when they teach us about culture?
